The Forensic Science program at Desert Oasis High School is a hands-on, two-year Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway that transitions from crime scene documentation and legal foundations in the first year to specialized disciplines like DNA, toxicology, and anthropology in the second. Built around teamwork, mock crime scenes, and interactive labs, the core program offers students the chance to earn a CTE certificate, college credit, and a graduation cord upon completion. For those looking to deepen their expertise, Advanced Studies options provide independent project opportunities and college or career preparation, while participation in student organizations like SkillsUSA or HOSA is highly encouraged to further develop leadership and technical skills.

Forensic Science I

This one-year course introduces the principles and procedures employed in criminal and civil investigations. Areas of study include history of forensic science, type of evidence, careers, legal and ethical issues and exploring crime scenes. Emphasis will be put on gathering information that is used to collect evidence, practice unbiased testimony, crime scene photography, and crime scene procedures. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of the course. This course fulfills one of the Arts/Humanities/CTE credits required for high school graduation.

Forensic Science II

This one-year completer course is designed for students who have successfully completed Forensic Science I. Areas of emphasis include principles and procedures related to laboratory fundamentals and forensic disciplines including biological and chemical hazards, utilization of lab equipment, lab accreditation, examination of evidence, and fingerprinting processes. This course fulfills one of the Arts/Humanities/CTE credits required for high school graduation and may count towards the College and Career Ready Flex Credit requirements for the Standard Diploma.

Forensic Science Advanced Studies

This one-year course is offered to students who have achieved all content standards in Forensic Science an advanced study through investigation and in-depth research. Students are expected to work independently or in a team and consult with their supervising teacher for guidance. Coursework may include various work-based learning experiences such as internships and job shadowing, involvement in a school-based enterprise, completion* of a capstone project, and/or portfolio development. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation and may be repeated.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Forensic Science III and teacher recommendation
